Fifteen people have been injured in a recent attack in two villages in Imphal, Manipur. The attack is believed to have been carried out by Kuki militants, who were armed with sophisticated weapons and bombs. The incident resulted in an exchange of fire between the militants and personnel of the state police and Manipur Rifles. The injured individuals have been admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Raj Medicity in Imphal.
Attack Details
The attack took place in Phayeng and Kangchup Chingkhong villages in Imphal West district. As the firing started, the police and Manipur Rifles personnel stationed in the villages retaliated, leading to a firefight that lasted over four hours. The security personnel successfully pushed back the militants to nearby hills, according to the police cited by news agency PTI.
Casualties and Injuries
The fifteen injured individuals are receiving medical treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Raj Medicity in Imphal. Two of the injured individuals are reported to be in critical condition. So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported from the Pombikhok region of Bishnupur district.
Previous Violence Incidents
In the past 24 hours, reports of violence have also emerged from Bishnupur district’s Pombikhok region. However, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries from that area thus far. Additionally, a joint team consisting of Manipur Police, Border Security Force, and Assam Rifles recovered seven bodies from Kakching’s Segnu-Serou area. The recovered bodies are related to a gunfight that occurred the previous week during an attack by Kuki militants.
Background
The state of Manipur has witnessed ethnic clashes and violence over the past month. The clashes were triggered by a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized by hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. As a result of the ethnic violence, 98 people have lost their lives, and 310 others have been injured. The government has stated that 37,450 people are currently sheltered in 272 relief camps. To restore peace, around 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed in Manipur.
