Sadanand Date: From 26/11 Hero to NIA Chief Leading Tahawwur Rana’s Prosecution

New Delhi, April 10, 2025 – The life of Sadanand Date, once a frontline hero in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, has now come full circle. Now serving as the chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Date leads India’s fight to bring Tahawwur Rana, a key 26/11 plotter, to justice.

Rana, an associate of David Coleman Headley and co-conspirator in the 26/11 attacks, has been extradited to India from the United States after an extended legal battle. He is expected to be formally arrested and interrogated by the NIA in Delhi.

Sadanand Date: The Cop Who Faced Kasab and Ismail at Cama Hospital

Before he was NIA chief, Sadanand Date was a battlefield responder, facing off against terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail on the night of November 26, 2008. Then serving as Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) in Mumbai, Date led a small team to Cama and Albless Hospitals, where two of the 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists had taken positions after attacking CST railway station.

Armed with a carbine and wearing a bulletproof jacket, Date’s team was quickly pinned down under heavy gunfire. Despite being gravely injured by a grenade, he held his ground for over 40 minutes, saving hostages and wounding Abu Ismail in the process.

“Before entering the terrace from the sixth floor, we threw a metal object to check if any attacker was guarding the gate. The moment we threw the object, a burst of bullets answered us. That’s how we knew what we were up against,” Date recalled in a 2023 interview.

The Cost of Courage: Date’s Injuries and Sacrifice

In the face of an armed enemy, Date and his team rescued a lift operator being used as a human shield. At 11:55 pm, a grenade explosion near Date left him unconscious. By the time he regained awareness, Kasab and Ismail had fled.

Date suffered injuries to his eyes, throat, chest, and limbs. Two of his colleagues were killed, and just 15 minutes later, Kasab and Ismail ambushed and killed ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, and ACP Ashok Kamte.

From Survivor to Strategist: Sadanand Date Takes Over as NIA Chief

Now, almost 17 years after the attacks, Sadanand Date is leading the NIA, India’s apex counter-terrorism body formed in the wake of 26/11. A 1990-batch IPS officer, he previously headed the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Maharashtra, and has also served in roles such as:

  • Police Commissioner of Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar
  • Joint Commissioner Law & Order, Mumbai
  • Joint Commissioner, Crime Branch

Appointed in March 2024, Date will continue as NIA chief until his superannuation in December 2026, or until further orders.

Tahawwur Rana Extradition: NIA Prepares for Crucial Interrogation

The arrival of Tahawwur Rana marks a critical juncture in the long quest for justice. Rana is accused of:

  • Providing logistical and financial support to David Headley and Lashkar-e-Taiba
  • Conspiring to wage war against India
  • Aiding in the execution of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which killed 166 people

He was first mentioned in the NIA chargesheet in 2011, and now faces prosecution under UAPA, IPC sections for murder, and conspiracy.

Special Interrogation and Psychological Evaluation for Rana

NIA has formed a special team of interrogators and forensic psychologists to examine Rana. The team is trained in counterterrorism, neuro-linguistic analysis, and behavioral profiling, ensuring every detail is extracted through lawful means.

“This case isn’t just symbolic; it’s about closure for hundreds of families and showcasing the power of India’s resolve against terror,” said a senior NIA official.

Justice Comes Full Circle: Sadanand Date Leads the Final Fight

For Sadanand Date, the mission is personal. He fought the terrorists on the frontlines in 2008. In 2025, he commands the nation’s leading force to bring one of the masterminds to justice.

As the Tahawwur Rana trial begins under NIA, Date’s journey is a stark reminder that courage never retires—it simply evolves from the battlefield to the courtroom.
