After spending more than two years in Lucknow jail, Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan was finally released on Thursday. Upon his release, Kappan told the media that he “struggled” during his time in prison and his wife, Raihana, expressed her happiness that justice had finally been served.
Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while on his way to cover the Hathras gang rape case. He was booked by the Uttar Pradesh government under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, and was also charged with having links to the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
Despite being granted bail by the Supreme Court in September 2022, Kappan remained in jail due to a money laundering case filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate. He will now remain in Delhi for the next six weeks, as per the release order.
Kappan’s family, including his wife and three children, had waited for 28 months to see him walk out of jail. His eldest son, Muzammil, questioned the cause of his father’s suffering and expressed gratitude to those who supported the family during this time.
