India faced Denmark in the Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie on Friday. Sumit Nagal, India’s number one player, was then tasked with bringing India back into the match and he did just that by defeating August Holmgren 4-6 6-3 6-4 to level the score at 1-1 at the end of day one.
Nagal Brings India Back in the Tie with Crucial Win
In the Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie against Denmark, India faced a tough challenge as Yuki Bhambri lost the opening match to Denmark’s top player, Holger Rune, with a score of 6-2 6-2. However, Sumit Nagal stepped up and brought India back into the tie. Ranked 506 in the world, Nagal dropped serve in the first game, but once he settled in, he was his usual fighting self. Despite squandering a few chances, Nagal eventually won the second set, forcing a decider.
Throughout the match, Nagal and Holmgren traded breaks, with Holmgren often charging the net to create chances for volley winners. However, Nagal was able to get the crucial break in the third game, taking a mini 3-2 lead. This lead stayed with Nagal, and he came out serving for the match in the 10th game. Holmgren’s forehand error gave Nagal three match points, and he converted the first one on Holmgren’s unforced error.
The victory by Nagal brings India back into the tie, setting the stage for an exciting match on Saturday when doubles and reverse singles will be played. If India loses this tie, they will be relegated to World Group II.
