A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Antakya, Turkey, late Monday, causing panic and damaging buildings just two weeks after the worst earthquake in modern Turkish history killed tens of thousands.
Two Reuters witnesses reported feeling the earthquake strongly and seeing additional damage to buildings in Antakya’s city centre. Reuters correspondents in Egypt and Lebanon confirmed the feeling.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the tremor occurred at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles).
Others who witnessed the recent earthquake said Turkish rescue teams were busy making sure everyone was safe.
Muna Al Omar, an Antakya resident, said she was in a tent in a park when the earthquake struck.
“I thought the earth was going to split open beneath my feet,” she sobbed, clutching her 7-year-old son.
“Will there be more aftershocks?” she wondered.
The two major earthquakes on February 6, which also shook neighbouring Syria, displaced over a million people and killed far more people than the most recent official tally of 46,000.
