Three people die while attending Madurai Chithirai Festival
Three people who were attending Madurai Chithirai Festival reportedly died due to drowning in River Vaigai on Friday. The incident occurred during Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the river. Over 10 lakh people from across the state took part in the ceremony.
The police rescue others and recover bodies from the river
The police had to rescue several people, including a woman who complained of uneasiness, from the river bed. The bodies of three people, including an 18-year-old, were recovered from a check dam constructed across River Vaigai. The identities of two of the deceased are yet to be known.
Risky behaviour observed despite warnings
According to reports, despite warnings, people at the festival engaged in risky behaviour, such as hurling little boys in the air. The police said that the check dam was slushy and the water was above 5 feet. The incident occurred despite only a few people being allowed to enter the river in order to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

Chithirai festival, also known as Chithirai Thiruvizha, Meenakshi Kalyanam, or Meenakshi Thirukalyanam, encompasses the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar. Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into River Vaigai is a part of the festival.
