A delivery agent in Hyderabad, identified as Mohammed Ilyas (27), sustained multiple fractures after jumping from the third floor of a building in an attempt to escape a dog attack. The incident occurred in the Manikonda area of Hyderabad on Sunday. Ilyas, who works for Amazon, was aggressively approached by a Labrador dog, which appeared to be untied.
Act of Fear: Leaping from the Third Floor
In a state of fear, Ilyas made the courageous decision to leap from the third floor, landing on the sidewall of the building. His quick thinking allowed him to escape the dog’s attack, but unfortunately resulted in multiple fractures. He was immediately admitted to a hospital where he is currently in stable condition and out of danger.
Police Investigation and Legal Actions
Following the incident, the Raidurgam police recorded Ilyas’s statement. It has been reported that a case has been filed against the flat owner under Section 289 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to negligent conduct regarding animals. This legal action highlights the importance of holding pet owners accountable for the actions of their animals.
Concerns for Delivery Worker Safety
This incident raises concerns about the safety of delivery workers who often encounter unpredictable situations while performing their duties. The incident serves as a reminder for pet owners to ensure their animals are properly restrained during deliveries to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Previous Incident and Union’s Demand
Tragically, this is the second incident of its kind in Hyderabad within the past four months. In January, a food delivery worker lost his life after jumping from the third floor to escape a German Shepherd attack. In light of these incidents, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has demanded accountability from dog owners in such situations. They have also called on Amazon to provide Ilyas with a daily wage during his treatment, recognizing that he sustained his injuries while on duty.
The bravery and quick thinking of Mohammed Ilyas, the delivery agent, saved him from a potentially dangerous dog attack. However, the incident highlights the need for better safety measures and accountability to protect delivery workers.
