Allegations of Loosening Laws
Ramesh highlighted the government’s efforts to liberalize environmental approvals and make significant amendments to the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, without consulting the relevant Standing Committee. He also pointed out that the Forest Rights Act, 2006, has been rendered ineffective, negatively impacting tribal communities. Additionally, he criticized the weakening of the National Green Tribunal and the opening up of the elephant trade.
Concerns of More Deregulation
The Congress leader expressed concerns that more assaults on environmental regulations are in the pipeline. He also alleged that environmental activists have been intimidated, further exacerbating the gap between the government’s global promises and their local actions.
