Kerala Becomes First State To Have Its Own Internet Service Provider
In a significant development, Kerala has become the first state in India to establish its own broadband service called K-FON (Kerala Fibre Optic Network). This government-owned broadband service aims to address the digital divide in the state by providing equal access to the internet for all residents.
Bridging the Digital Divide
The K-FON initiative seeks to bridge the gap in internet access by ensuring that every household in Kerala has access to the internet. Initially, the project is expected to connect 14,000 households in the state, marking an important step towards achieving universal internet access.
A Landmark Achievement
During the launch of K-FON, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his pride in Kerala becoming the first state with its own internet service. The project holds the potential to transform Kerala into a knowledge economy and an innovation society. By connecting the state with the global information highway, K-FON aims to lay the foundation for a new Kerala with global dimensions.
Opposition and Allegations
However, the project has faced opposition from the Congress-led UDF (United Democratic Front) party, which boycotted the launch. The UDF accused the government of corruption in the implementation of the project, alleging that the optical fibers used in K-FON were imported from China and rebranded.
