The upcoming film ‘Adipurush’ has been engulfed in controversy and public outrage, with several celebrities and TV actors who have worked in Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’ expressing their criticism. Gajendra Chauhan, known for his role as Yudhishthir in BR Chopra’s ‘Mahabharat,’ and Aashiesh Sharrma, who portrayed Rama in the TV series ‘Siya Ke Ram,’ have voiced their concerns about the film.
Gajendra Chauhan’s Stand
In an interaction with India Today, Gajendra Chauhan revealed that he had bought a ticket to watch ‘Adipurush’ but chose not to see it after witnessing the trailers and short clips. He expressed his disappointment with the portrayal of Lord Ram in the film, stating that he wants to see Lord Ram as Lord Shri Ram and doesn’t want to compromise his beliefs.
Regarding the backlash and dialogue change in ‘Adipurush,’ Gajendra Chauhan emphasized that the damage has already been done and improving it now won’t make a difference. He believed that the filmmaker deserved punishment, questioned the decisions of the censor board, and called for a complete ban on the film, urging the government to intervene.
Aashiesh Sharrma’s Critique
Aashiesh Sharrma, in an interview with Wion, expressed his concerns about distorting history and facts in ‘Adipurush.’ He emphasized the responsibility of being authentic and honest in the depiction of historical events and characters, particularly when targeting the younger generation (Gen Z). He considered distorting history as a cultural crime.
Furthermore, Aashiesh Sharrma criticized Indian filmmakers for adopting a Westernized style of filmmaking. He believed that there is an inferiority complex and a colonized mindset among filmmakers, causing them to shy away from showcasing Indian culture and society in its true form. He called for a shift towards telling Indian stories with an India-rooted outlook and authenticity.
Film Changes After Backlash
Following the backlash and concerns raised, the makers of ‘Adipurush’ made changes to certain dialogues in the film, which were said to have hurt the sentiments of the audience.
The controversy surrounding ‘Adipurush’ continues to attract attention and public outrage, highlighting the differing opinions on the portrayal of characters, historical accuracy, and cultural authenticity in the film.
