The Customs officials at Kochi airport made a significant gold seizure when they intercepted a passenger arriving from Malaysia. The passenger, identified as Muhammadali Gafoor, was found to be carrying gold hidden in his rectum. The Customs discovered two capsule-shaped packets containing gold paste, weighing a total of 554.600 grams, concealed inside the passenger’s rectum. Additionally, two crude gold chains weighing 230.300 grams were seized from his hand baggage.
Previous Gold Seizures at Kochi Airport
This recent incident follows a series of gold smuggling cases at Kochi airport. In a previous incident, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department seized 1260 grams of gold worth 53 lakhs from a passenger traveling from Sharjah to Kochi. The accused in that case was identified as Muhammad Suhaib.
On June 1, Kochi Customs officials had seized gold worth Rs 47.2 lakh from two passengers in two separate cases. In one case, a passenger named Thaneswaran Kuppuswamy arrived from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia via Malindo Airlines. He was found to be carrying 710.30 grams of gold worth Rs 37.22 lakh, which was hidden under his clothes. The Customs seized three crude chains (567.41g), two gold pendants (40.58g), and a gold bangle (102.4g) from him. In another case, a passenger named Mohammed Rasheed smuggled gold worth Rs 10 lakh from Sharjah via an Air India flight.
