Puducherry Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has taken a significant step towards providing government school students in the union territory with a fair opportunity to pursue medical education. She has sent a proposal to the Centre, urging the allocation of a 10% quota in medical admission for these students. This move is aimed at improving access to medical education for students from government schools.
Previous Rejection by the Ministry
Tamilisai Soundararajan recalled that a similar proposal was made during the rule of the previous Congress government but was not approved by the Ministry for certain reasons. However, there is now a consensus between the Lt Governor and the elected government to grant a 10% quota to government school students selected through CENTAC (Puducherry’s Centralised Admission Committee).
File Sent to Union Home Ministry
The proposal, along with the resolution of the cabinet, has been forwarded to the Union Home Ministry for approval. The Lt Governor expressed her confidence that the approval would be granted swiftly. She emphasized the importance of sending the file to the Ministry, as the territory administration alone cannot decide on the quota.
Impact on Higher Education
If approved, this initiative will have a positive impact on higher education in Puducherry. It aims to create a more inclusive and equitable system, providing deserving government school students with an opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming medical professionals. The move aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting education and ensuring equal opportunities for all.
