The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has finally pronounced its verdict today in the Prabhat Gupta murder case, a case that dates back 23 years. In this high-profile case, Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Mishra Teni, is the prime accused.
The Background:
Prabhat Gupta, a member of the youth wing of the Samajwadi Party, was shot dead in 2000 in Surrey Bazar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, while he was returning home. Ajay Mishra Teni, who was associated with the BJP at that time, along with three others, was named in the FIR. However, the trial court acquitted Teni in 2004 due to a lack of evidence.
The Court Proceedings:
The Uttar Pradesh government challenged the trial court’s decision in 2004, arguing that Teni and the other accused were responsible for Prabhat’s murder. The state claimed that Teni had a dispute with Prabhat over the panchayat elections and alleged that he and the other accused shot Prabhat. The trial court had ignored the testimony of eyewitnesses to the incident, which the government argued should have been considered.
The Verdict and Reservations:
The decision on this case has been reserved three times so far. The bench, consisting of Justice Attu Rehman Masoodi and Justice Om Prakash Shukla, reserved its decision on February 21, 2023. Today, the Allahabad High Court announced its verdict after careful consideration of the evidence and arguments presented by both sides.
