Apple iPhone manufacturer, Wistron, has decided to exit its business in India after 15 years. The company plans to sell its plant located in Kolar, near Bengaluru, to Indian conglomerate Tata Group. This move comes as Wistron faced challenges in the supply chain and local employment norms, which led to its decision to leave the country.
Talks with Tata Group and Future Plans
Tata Group has been in talks with Wistron since last year regarding the transaction. The Taiwanese firm is likely to approach the National Company Law Tribunal and the Registrar of Companies to dissolve its operations in India within the next year. Once the transaction is finalized, Tata Electronics will take over operations of the Karnataka factory and begin manufacturing new Apple products.
Implications for iPhone Manufacturing in India
With Wistron’s exit, Tata Group is set to become the fourth assembler for the Apple iPhone 15 series in India. The other assemblers for the lineup include Foxconn, Luxshare, and Pegatron. This move strengthens Tata Group’s position as the first local Indian manufacturer for Apple. Market research firm TrendForce predicts that Tata Group will assemble a portion of the iPhone 15 series models in India.
It remains to be seen how this transition will impact the overall iPhone manufacturing landscape in India. However, this development marks an important shift in the industry dynamics and opens up new opportunities for local manufacturing and partnerships.
