Assam Floods: Over 35,000 People Affected, Lakhimpur Worst-Hit By Heavy Rains

The situation of flood in Assam continues to be grim as heavy rainfall persists across the state. Overnight downpours have led to the inundation of villages, towns, and farmlands. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 33,000 people have been affected as several rivers have surpassed the danger level in different parts of the state. The district of Lakhimpur is the hardest hit, with over 25,200 people affected. Dibrugarh follows with more than 3,800 affected individuals, while Tinsukia has nearly 2,700 affected persons, as reported by news agency PTI.

Extensive Damage and Erosion

The ongoing heavy rainfall in Assam has resulted in severe flooding and landslides, affecting over 35,000 individuals. Lakhimpur district is the most severely impacted, with more than 25,200 people bearing the brunt of the disaster. The situation remains critical as rivers continue to flow above the danger level, submerging villages and causing extensive damage to crops and infrastructure. In addition to the destruction of crops, massive erosions have been observed in districts such as Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, and Udalguri. Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have also been reported in Dima Hasao and Karimganj, as per PTI.

Impact on Infrastructure

The floodwaters have severely affected embankments, roads, bridges, and other crucial infrastructure in several districts, including Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Nagaon, Udalguri, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Bongaigaon, Majuli, Morigaon, Sivasagar, and South Salmara.

Red Alert and Weather Forecasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in Assam over the next five days. The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has predicted “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy (11-20 cm in 24 hours) with extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours)” in lower districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon. Additionally, “heavy to very heavy” rainfall is expected in Dhubri, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Goalpara, and Karimganj districts. The weather office has also issued an orange alert for Tuesday, followed by a yellow alert for the subsequent two days. A red alert indicates the need for immediate action, an orange alert advises preparedness, and a yellow alert signifies the need for vigilance and staying updated.
