On Tuesday, BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma was embroiled in a controversy after allegedly discussing sensitive selection matters on camera.
During the sting operation, Sharma was seen making disparaging remarks about players such as Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. The BCCI recently reinstated Sharma after he was removed following India’s performance in the T20 World Cup in Australia. Sharma allegedly spilled the beans about his conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli during the Zee News sting operation.
Sharma claimed that former captain Virat Kohli and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had an ego clash.
After feeling unfairly removed as ODI captain by Ganguly, the chief selector claimed that Kohli began to believe he was “bigger than the Board” and attempted to “hit back” at the former BCCI president.
When a player becomes well-known, he begins to believe that he is invincible and that the Board is beneath him. He believes that cricket in India would cease to exist if he did not exist. Is that something that has happened before? Our most famous cricketers have come and gone, but the sport has survived. As a result, he attempted to retaliate against the president. That scandal caused a lot of damage. It was the epitome of a player defying the BCCI. Aren’t the president’s speeches supposed to represent the BCCI?
Time will tell who was at fault, but make no mistake: the BCCI was the intended victim. Our entire roster has been warned against making such a move due to the inevitable backlash from fans, regardless of who is to blame—the president or them. There must be respect for the chair “Sharma made a remark.
Furthermore, he claimed that Kohli purposefully brought up the topic of his removal as ODI captain in front of reporters in January 2022, prior to India’s tour of South Africa, because he believed Ganguly was involved in his removal as 50-over captain. He also claimed that Kohli made up his story about being fired as ODI captain without explanation to smear Ganguly in the media.
Furthermore, the chairman of selectors revealed that the two players have helped each other through difficult times. When Virat was going through a rough patch, it was Rohit who was the most supportive. When I was having a confidence crisis with the bat, Virat encouraged me “said Sharma, recalling a similar low point in Rohit’s life.
ALLEGATION OF INJURIES
Many cricketers, according to Sharma, use injections to speed up their recovery so they can play again despite being only about 85% healthy.
The former India pace bowler also claimed that he and the team’s management disagreed on whether Bumrah should play in the September T20I series against Australia after recovering from a stress fracture.
Bumrah is still out and will most likely miss the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar series (four Tests) as well as the subsequent ODI series (which consists of three games).
When contacted by PTI, Sharma declined to comment.
The BCCI is reportedly investigating the matter because national selectors are contractually prohibited from speaking to the media.
Jay (Shah), the BCCI secretary, will ultimately decide Chetan’s fate. “The question is whether T20 captain Hardik Pandya or ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma would like to sit with Chetan in a selection meeting knowing that he has let out internal discussions,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
