George King-Thompson, a British man, was detained by South Korean authorities in Seoul after successfully climbing 73 floors of the Lotte World Tower, which is the world’s fifth tallest building. The incident occurred when Thompson attempted to ascend the tower without any ropes or safety harnesses. Despite the absence of protective equipment, he managed to reach the 73rd floor before being stopped by the authorities and placed into a maintenance cradle.
The Climbing Attempt and Detention
Wearing only shorts, the 24-year-old climbed the skyscraper for over an hour while police and fire crews gathered below. Eventually, he was detained by the authorities for questioning. Fortunately, Thompson did not sustain any major injuries during the ascent, according to Lotte Property & Development, the company that operates the tower.
Legal Consequences and Investigation
Thompson was arrested on charges of trespassing and obstruction of business, as reported by The Korea Herald. It was revealed that he had intentions of parachuting from the top of the building. The police are currently investigating the manner in which he approached and climbed the tower. Lotte Property & Development has also expressed its intention to review the tower’s structural and system design to prevent unauthorized climbing from the ground.
Previous Climbing Incidents
This is not the first time Thompson has engaged in such daring climbing feats. In 2019, he reportedly faced arrest and a six-month imprisonment sentence resulting from a civil lawsuit after climbing the Shard building in London. Similarly, in 2018, French climber Alain Robert, also known as “Spider-Man” for his audacious stunts, was detained after scaling the Lotte World Tower to the 75th floor.
