The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the death case of Sub Inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Indian government has assigned the case to the CBI.
Fatal Accident and Controversial Background
Junmoni Rabha, also known as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabang cop’ due to her resemblance to popular Hindi police movie characters, was involved in a fatal accident. The collision took place at Sarubhugia village in the Kaliabor Sub-Division of Nagaon district. Junmoni Rabha was driving alone in her private car at the time and was not in uniform.
Assam Police’s Recommendation for CBI Inquiry
Following the accident, the Assam Police recommended a CBI inquiry into the death of the woman sub-inspector. Initially, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police was entrusted with the investigation. However, due to suspicions of foul play, Junmoni Rabha’s family demanded an impartial probe into the accident, believing it to be a pre-planned murder orchestrated by an unidentified racket.
Reshuffle in Assam Police Department
In May, the Assam government conducted a major reshuffle within the state police department. As part of the reshuffle, various police officers were transferred. The Superintendent of Police (SP) positions in Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts, where Junmoni Rabha worked and cases related to her were filed, saw a change in personnel.
Family’s Appeal for Justice
Sumitra Rabha, the mother of the deceased, along with Junmoni’s aunt Subarna Bodo, appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for an impartial inquiry into the matter. They sought justice for their family and urged the authorities to punish the perpetrators responsible for what they believe was a deliberate and carefully planned accident.
