Chaos Erupts In MCD House Over Invalid Vote Declaration, Violence Ensues

On Friday, after Mayor Shelly Oberoi declared one vote invalid in the election of six members of a key municipal committee, a fight erupted in the MCD House, with members of the BJP and the AAP kicking, punching, and pushing one another while shouting.

Councilman Ashok Manu passed out in the middle of the chaos and had to be taken to the hospital.

Atishi, an AAP MLA, claimed that after realising their party was going to lose the election, BJP supporters became enraged and attacked Delhi’s mayor.

The BJP’s Pankaj Luthra blamed the AAP for the chaos. If there is an election for a standing committee, he could run.

A video shows members of the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP hurling water bottles and apples at each other inside the House. Another video shows female members of the council fighting on the House floor.

The Standing Committee had six seats open, and voting began at 11 a.m. and ended at 2:30 p.m. The count began ten minutes later.

It took me well over two hours to count everything. The BJP members voted against the mayor’s request that the vote be declared invalid.

As a result of the mayor’s decision, BJP and AAP council members began pushing and shouting at one another. A video showed several council members walking around with holes in their kurtas.

“While one party is willing to recount, the other is not. That is why I will not go into detail. The result stands because the invalid vote was counted “said Shelly Oberoi, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and newly elected Mayor after a two-month delay.

According to PTI, at least 242 of the 250 councillors in the AAP-controlled civic body voted to appoint six members to the MCD’s standing committee, a powerful body that decides how and on what projects funds are spent.

Ms. Oberoi found herself in the crosshairs of angry BJP councillors after declaring one vote invalid, and they yelled, “you are not in your senses” at her.

Some BJP council members shouted “Jai Shri Ram” and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Aam Aadmi Party zindabad,” said Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party.

Seven people are competing for three positions on the standing committee.

The Aamil Aamir Party nominated Aamil Malik, Raminder Kaur, Mohini Jeenwal, and Sarika Chaudhary as candidates. The BJP has nominated Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Pankaj Luthra to run for office. Gajender Singh Daral, a former independent councilman who joined the BJP recently, is also running.

Simply put, the panel is MCD’s highest level of decision-making.
