Chennai Scorches at 38°C on April 16 as Heatwave Tightens Grip Across Tamil Nadu

Chennai experienced a blazing Wednesday as temperatures soared to 38°C, intensifying heatwave concerns across Tamil Nadu. Authorities urge citizens to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exposure.

Chennai Weather:
Chennai, April 16, 2025 – The capital city of Tamil Nadu witnessed an intense rise in temperature on Wednesday, with the daytime high reaching 38°C, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted a continued upward trend in mercury levels, prompting heat advisories across the region.

The morning started at a warm 27°C, with humidity levels around 60%. As the day progressed, heat intensified, leaving many parts of Chennai feeling the full brunt of the sun.

Weather Summary for April 16

  • Condition: Mostly sunny and dry
  • High: 38°C (100°F)
  • Low: 27°C (80°F)
  • Humidity: 58% (midday average)
  • Winds: Light easterly winds at 12 km/h
  • UV Index: Very High

The weather is expected to remain dry with clear skies through the evening. No rainfall is forecasted for the next 48 hours.

Civic Advisory: Stay Indoors Between Noon and 3 PM

With the IMD classifying Chennai’s current condition under ‘Heatwave Watch’, authorities have advised residents to:

  • Avoid direct sunlight between 12 PM and 3 PM
  • Hydrate frequently, especially children and elderly
  • Wear light cotton clothing
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
  • Use caps, umbrellas, and sunscreen when stepping out

Hospitals and emergency services have also been alerted to remain prepared for heat-related medical cases, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke.

Schools and Outdoor Work Impacted

Several Chennai schools reported changes in class timings to avoid mid-day exposure, while outdoor construction and labour-intensive work across industrial zones in Ambattur and Sriperumbudur were either staggered or temporarily suspended during peak hours.

“We are ensuring labourers take frequent breaks and have access to shade and water,” said an HR manager from an auto component unit in Sriperumbudur.

Wider Tamil Nadu Impact

While Chennai faced a scorching day, other parts of Tamil Nadu also experienced above-normal temperatures:

CityMax Temp (°C)
Madurai39°C
Trichy40°C
Vellore38.5°C
Coimbatore36°C
Salem37.2°C

IMD predicts continued high temperatures for the next 3–4 days, especially in interior districts.

Experts Cite Climate Pattern Shift

Climatologists warn that urban heat island effects and delayed sea breeze circulation are contributing to extreme weather.

“Chennai’s coastal humidity adds to heat discomfort. Lack of tree cover, high concrete density, and traffic congestion all intensify urban temperatures,” said Dr. Anitha Ramesh, a climate scientist at Anna University.

Power and Water Demand Spike Due To Chennai Weather

With rising temperatures, electricity consumption has shot up by 18% in the last 10 days. TNEB has assured no load shedding, but has asked citizens to minimize non-essential usage between 6 PM and 10 PM.

Metro Water authorities also noted increased demand for tankers, with several areas requesting additional water supply due to fast depleting overhead tanks.

Relief Expected by Weekend?

The IMD forecast suggests that moderate sea breeze patterns may return by April 19, potentially bringing light showers to coastal areas, which could offer minor relief.

However, temperatures are expected to hover around 36°C–38°C until then, with no significant rainfall in the immediate forecast.

Chennai on High Alert as Summer Deepens

As Chennai grapples with the growing heat, authorities are urging citizens to stay vigilant, especially vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, outdoor workers, and children.

With the official peak summer season (May–June) yet to begin, today’s heat serves as a stark reminder of the city’s climate vulnerability. Proactive hydration, shade, and responsible energy use are being emphasized as survival tactics in what’s shaping up to be a challenging summer.
