According to the police, Vijayakumar allegedly died by suicide after obtaining a gun from his gunman. The incident took place on Friday morning, around 6:15 AM, in Red Fields near the Race Course. Vijayakumar reportedly shot himself using a pistol borrowed from his gunman, who was on duty at his official residence. Upon hearing the gunshot, security personnel immediately alerted senior officers. The body was subsequently transferred to the Coimbatore Medical College hospital.

Vijayakumar, a 2009-batch IPS officer, had an illustrious career in the Tamil Nadu Police Department. He served in various capacities, including Superintendent of Police in locations such as Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. Prior to becoming the DIG of Coimbatore Range in January 2023, he held the position of Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anna Nagar. His untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the department, with colleagues and superiors expressing their deep sorrow and extending condolences to his family.
