In a tragic incident, eight police officers, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended in Kerala following the custodial death of a man arrested for allegedly possessing drugs. The victim, identified as Jifri, a 30-year-old resident of Tirurangadi, was taken into custody along with four others. The police seized 18.14 grams of MDMA from the group. However, during their time in custody, Jifri collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. The autopsy revealed that he had 13 injuries on his body, raising concerns about possible police torture. A thorough investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
Questions Raised on Police Conduct
The district special branch officer has acknowledged the suspension of the eight Tanur Police Station personnel involved in the arrest. The Crime Branch Deputy SP has ordered a probe into the custodial death, while the Special Branch Deputy SP is likely to investigate any lapses on the part of the police officials. The medical officers found a crystal-shaped object wrapped in a plastic sheet in the victim’s stomach, which they believe is MDMA that he might have swallowed after his apprehension. It remains unclear whether the injuries were inflicted during police custody or existed before the arrest. Only further scientific examination will provide clarity on the cause of death.
Call for Thorough Investigation
As the investigation proceeds, concerns have been raised about police conduct during arrests and the need for greater accountability in such cases. The police have booked the incident as an unnatural death, but the circumstances surrounding the case demand a comprehensive and transparent investigation to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
