Cyclone Biparjoy has rapidly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. The coastal areas of Kerala, located along the Arabian Sea, are now facing the impact of the cyclonic storm. As a precautionary measure, authorities have issued warnings to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the sea.
Warnings to Prevent Fishermen from Venturing into the Sea
The India Meteorological Centre (IMD) has reported that the cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is expected to bring gale wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, over the east-central Arabian Sea and adjacent areas of southeast Arabian Sea. Local authorities have issued warnings to fishermen, urging them to stay away from deep-sea fishing due to the severe cyclonic storm.
According to ANI, one fisherman stated, “Fishermen are staying close to the shore and not going deep sea after there were strong winds last night.”
IMD’s Special Bulletin for Fishermen
In a special bulletin addressed to fishermen, the IMD provided detailed information on the cyclonic conditions. The bulletin stated that gale wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, are likely to persist over the east-central Arabian Sea and adjacent areas of southeast Arabian Sea. In the evening of June 7th, these wind speeds are expected to increase to 80-90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, in the same area.
Additionally, squally wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely to affect the areas adjacent to the west-central and south Arabian Sea, including the Goa coast. The Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu coast, and the adjoining Comorin area may experience squally winds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph.
Cyclone Biparjoy’s Impact and Future Track
Cyclone Biparjoy, the first storm of the year in the Arabian Sea, has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, the cyclone has been moving nearly northwards at a speed of 2 kmph. As of 0530 hours, it was centered over the east-central and adjacent southeast Arabian Sea, approximately 890 km west-southwest of Goa, 1,000 km southwest of Mumbai, 1,070 km south-southwest of Porbandar, and 1,370 km south of Karachi.
