A heartbreaking incident occurred in northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar, where a 51-year-old autorickshaw driver, identified as Ajit Sharma, lost his life after drowning in a ditch filled with rainwater. The tragic incident took place at the site of the under-construction Gagan Cinema flyover. Ajit Sharma, a resident of Nandanagri, met with a fatal accident when his autorickshaw accidentally fell into the ditch dug by the Public Works Department as part of the flyover construction. This unfortunate event happened on Friday, and the authorities are currently investigating the matter to ascertain further details.
Rainwater Leads to Tragic Outcome

Heavy showers over the past two days in the national capital resulted in the rainwater filling the ditch, making it a dangerous trap. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey reported that a PCR call was received around 3.30 pm about a man drowning in the ditch near the service road alongside Wazirabad Road. Preliminary inquiry suggested that Ajit Sharma might not have realized the depth of the ditch and attempted to drive over it, which ultimately led to his accidental drowning.
Search for Witnesses and Post-Mortem
The police found Ajit Sharma’s autorickshaw stuck in the ditch, and his body was discovered by a passerby. However, no witnesses to the drowning have been identified so far. The police have not found any injury marks on the deceased’s body, and it will be handed over to his family after post-mortem, according to PTI reports.
Heavy Rains and Waterlogging in Delhi
The incident occurred amidst heavy rains and waterlogging in various parts of Delhi, causing traffic congestion and disruption. Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi unit chief of the BJP, criticized the AAP government, stating that despite their claims, most roads in the city were submerged after the rain on Thursday night and Friday. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by both commuters and authorities during monsoon season.
Future Road Infrastructure Projects
Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who previously held the Public Works department portfolio, had announced the construction of an underpass at Loni Chowk in northeast Delhi and a flyover between Nand Nagri and Gagan Cinema junction. The development of these projects aims to make the entire 10-kilometer road stretch between Signature Bridge and Bhopura Chowk signal-free.
