Delhi power minister Atishi, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has reassured residents of Delhi that those currently receiving zero electricity bills will continue to do so even if surcharges are increased. Atishi made this statement during a press conference held in the national capital. She went on to attribute the surge in power tariffs in Delhi to the Central government, placing the blame squarely on their shoulders.
Power Tariffs Increase Due to Central Government Mismanagement and Artificial Coal Shortage
Atishi highlighted the mismanagement of the Central government as the primary cause of rising power tariffs. She claimed that the government’s actions have created an “artificial shortage” of coal in the country, resulting in increased costs. According to Atishi, India has never experienced such a scarcity of coal in its 75-year history.
The minister further alleged that the Central government has compelled coal buyers to use 10% imported coal, which is significantly more expensive than domestic coal. She questioned the government’s relationship with foreign coal exporters and criticized the decision to force producers to purchase coal at inflated prices. Atishi emphasized that there is no genuine shortage of coal in the country, suggesting that any production shortfalls are a result of an artificial scarcity.
Central Government’s Role in Power Tariffs
Atishi pointed out that power tariffs in Delhi, and possibly in other cities as well, are directly influenced by the Central government. The Power Purchase Agreement Cost (PPAC), which remains fixed for a 10-year term, is regularly assessed by entities such as the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and other electricity regulation authorities. These assessments determine the surcharge adjustments allowed for power companies.
Atishi, the power minister of Delhi, held a press conference where she assured residents that those who currently have zero power bills will not be affected by any surcharge increases. She attributed the surge in power tariffs to the mismanagement of the Central government, which has led to an artificial coal shortage and increased costs. Atishi emphasized that the Central government plays a crucial role in determining power tariffs and urged them to address the issues causing the price hikes.
