Now, a Robot Can Self-Detect Crop Diseases and Spray Pesticides, Courtesy of IIT Kharagpur
Farming is entering a new era, and now, technology is making it safer and more efficient. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has developed an advanced agricultural robot capable of autonomously detecting crop diseases and spraying pesticides, bringing a revolution in precision agriculture.
This innovation, named FarmBot, is designed to help farmers monitor plant health and protect crops without direct human involvement, reducing the risks associated with pesticide exposure.
Now Monitoring Crops with Advanced Technology
FarmBot uses state-of-the-art camera-based image analysis to monitor crops for any signs of disease. The robot’s sensors and cameras scan plants for symptoms, and once a disease is detected, it automatically selects and sprays the appropriate pesticide.
Key features of the FarmBot include:
- Real-Time Disease Detection: Identifies and analyzes plant health using high-resolution cameras.
- Autonomous Pesticide Spraying: Sprays the right pesticide without human intervention.
- Multi-Pesticide System: Equipped with three 4-liter tanks for different pesticides.
- Flexible Movement: A tracked mobile manipulator ensures easy navigation on uneven farm terrain.
- Precision Application: Minimizes pesticide waste and environmental impact.
Now a Safer Way to Protect Crops
Traditional pesticide application methods expose farmers to harmful chemicals, affecting their health over time. Now, with FarmBot, farmers can protect their crops without coming into contact with toxic substances.
Professor Dilip Kumar Pratihar, who led the project at IIT Kharagpur, emphasized the importance of this technology: “Our goal was to create a solution that enhances farmer safety while ensuring effective crop protection. FarmBot is a significant step in that direction.”
Now Boosting Farming Efficiency
In addition to safety, FarmBot also brings efficiency to farming:
- Fast Coverage: It can move at a speed of 3 meters per minute.
- Extended Operation: A single charge provides 1.5 hours of continuous operation.
- Complete Coverage: The manipulator arm rotates 360 degrees, ensuring no plant is missed.
Now, farmers can protect large fields with minimal effort, ensuring healthier crops and better yields.
Now Supporting Sustainable Agriculture
By using FarmBot, farmers can reduce the excessive use of pesticides, which is a common problem in traditional farming. Now, pesticides are only applied where needed, minimizing their environmental impact.
The multi-tank system of FarmBot also allows farmers to use different pesticides based on the type of crop disease detected. This targeted approach promotes sustainable farming practices.
Now a Made-in-India Solution
FarmBot is a product of Indian innovation. Developed by IIT Kharagpur’s Mechanical Engineering Department and funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the project has been manufactured by TECHNIDO, an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
This robotic solution has also secured an Indian patent, ensuring that the technology remains unique and protected.
Now Shaping the Future of Smart Farming
The introduction of FarmBot is just the beginning. With further development, it can be adapted for a wide range of agricultural tasks, including:
- Automatic Weeding: Identifying and removing weeds without chemicals.
- Smart Irrigation: Monitoring soil moisture and watering crops automatically.
- Harvesting Assistance: Identifying ripe fruits and vegetables for picking.
Now, Indian farmers have access to world-class technology that makes farming smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
What Lies Ahead
As the world moves towards smart farming, innovations like FarmBot are paving the way for a more efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural future. IIT Kharagpur’s FarmBot is a significant milestone, and now, it is set to transform farming practices not just in India, but around the world.
