Director Sudipto Sen recently held a press conference in Mumbai to unveil the true source of inspiration for his controversial film, ‘The Kerala Story.’ During the conference, he introduced three young women, Shruti, Chitra, and Adhira, whose experiences formed the basis of the movie. These women had survived religious conversion in Kerala and were being cared for at the Aarsha Vidya Samajam Ashram.
Highlighting the Sufferings
Sen emphasized the significant number of girls in the country who have undergone similar ordeals but praised the presence of the three women at the conference. He shared Shruti’s story, describing how she lived in a small village without electricity due to a cut-off in the supply. Shruti faced additional challenges, such as people snatching away her bag when she went out to purchase vegetables. The interviews with these young women were conducted through a small partition in their house as they were too afraid to come out.
Motivation for the Film
The director expressed his motivation behind making the film, citing the exploitation and desolation forced upon these girls by unscrupulous individuals. The struggles faced by these survivors became the driving force behind ‘The Kerala Story.’ Sen aimed to shed light on the plight of thousands of girls who have endured similar hardships.
Addressing Misconceptions
Sen clarified that the movie is not intended to focus on any particular religion but rather serves as a representation of the suffering experienced by countless girls. He emphasized the accuracy of the depictions in the film and encouraged the alleged victims present at the conference to question and cross-examine the content.
Producer’s Contribution
Vipul Shah, the producer of ‘The Kerala Story,’ also made an announcement during the conference. He revealed an initiative aimed at supporting 300 alleged victims of religious conversion at an ashram and donated Rs 51 lakh towards the cause. Shah emphasized that the initiative is not about promoting any specific religion but rather about assisting the girls who have endured hardships.
‘The Kerala Story’ has gained significant attention and success, becoming the second-highest-grossing Hindi movie of 2023.
