In a concerning development, Maharashtra has witnessed a notable increase in acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in the week leading up to Diwali. Official data from the state health department highlights 175 documented cases between November 1 and 7 across nine sentinel surveillance sites dedicated to monitoring air pollution-related health issues.
Pune Emerges as Focal Point
Pune has emerged as a focal point in this surge, reporting 69 cases of ARIs during the specified period. This increase coincides with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 243. The health department is actively monitoring all surveillance sites in response to the situation.
City-wise Breakdown
Mumbai follows Pune with 27 reported cases, Vashi with 21, and Ulhasnagar with 20 cases. Notably, despite Jalgaon having the highest AQI at 280 during the same timeframe, it recorded zero cases of ARI. This raises questions about the potential correlation between air quality and infection rates.
Health Department’s Concerns
Expressing concern over the situation, a health official emphasized the active monitoring of all surveillance sites to address the surge in respiratory infections.
