Yellow Alert and Ongoing Precautions
The Meteorological Department has issued a “yellow” alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places in plains, low, and mid hills until July 9. This alert emphasizes the need for caution and preparedness among residents in the affected areas. The wet spell is expected to continue until July 11, and there is a possibility of flash floods in watersheds and other channels in districts such as Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Solan.
Impact of the Monsoon Season
Since the onset of the monsoon on June 24, Himachal Pradesh has faced significant losses amounting to Rs 275.86 crores. The losses include damage to public infrastructure, such as roads under the Public Works Department (PWD), and Jal Shakti Vibhag. Additionally, as many as 23 roads remain closed for traffic due to the adverse weather conditions.
Cautions and Concerns
The Meteorological Department also cautions about potential damage to standing crops, fruit plants, and young seedlings due to the ongoing rains and floods. Moreover, disruptions to water and electricity supply are anticipated, causing further inconvenience to the residents in the affected regions.
The flash flood incident in Una highlights the need for preparedness and prompt action during the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh. As the “yellow” alert persists, authorities and residents should remain vigilant to minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of the people living in the region.
