In response to the recent outbreak of violence and arson in Manipur, the state government has reestablished a curfew and deployed the army to maintain law and order. Additionally, internet services have been suspended across the state until May 26, with the aim of preventing the spread of rumors and hate speeches that may further aggravate the situation.
Fresh Incidents of Violence Reported in Manipur
Miscreants have set abandoned houses on fire in the city of Imphal, leading to a renewed wave of violence. As a result, curfew has been imposed in the New Lambulane area of the state capital. To restore peace and stability, the army and paramilitary forces have been deployed to Manipur, according to reports from NDTV. The clashes erupted between the majority Meitei community and the tribal Kuki community, centering around a dispute over space in a local market in the New Checkon area of Imphal.
Church Targeted and Burnt Down
The Delhi unit of the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) has alleged that Meitei mobs targeted and burnt down the ICI Church located in Imphal’s Chassad Avenue. This incident has further escalated the tensions and highlighted the severity of the situation.
Background of Unrest
The recent violence in Manipur stems from a “Tribal Solidarity March” held on May 3 in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. Prior to this, tensions had already been simmering due to the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which led to smaller agitations across the state.
The authorities have taken strict measures to control the situation and ensure the safety of the public. The reimposition of curfew and deployment of the army, along with the suspension of internet services, aims to curb further violence and maintain stability in Manipur.
