Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently made a controversial statement during a campaign rally in New Delhi. He suggested that if Muslims agreed to shift the mosques located in Kashi (Varanasi) and Mathura, it would pave the way for the construction of grand temples at these historically significant sites.
400 Seats for Temple Construction
Sarma emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to win 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He argued that achieving this majority would enable the party to build temples at the disputed sites of Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, similar to the Ram Mandir construction in Ayodhya after the BJP secured 300 seats in a previous election .
Legal and Historical Context
The sites in question have been contentious for decades. In Mathura, the Shahi Idgah mosque stands adjacent to the Krishna Janmasthan temple, and there is ongoing litigation seeking the mosque’s removal. Similarly, in Varanasi, the Gyanvapi Mosque, located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, is part of a legal battle regarding Hindu and Muslim religious rights over the site .
Additional Political Promises
Sarma also mentioned other ambitious plans contingent on winning 400 seats, including the inclusion of Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) into India. He criticized the Congress party for not addressing PoJK issues during their tenure, asserting that a strong mandate for BJP would facilitate bringing this territory under Indian control .
These statements are part of the BJP’s broader strategy to consolidate Hindu votes by emphasizing religious and nationalistic themes. Sarma’s remarks reflect the party’s focus on historical and religious sentiments to garner support ahead of the elections .
