At least 238 people have lost their lives and over 900 others have been injured in a devastating train collision in Balasore, Odisha. The tragic incident involved three trains, including the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express. The collision occurred when several coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed and collided with the Coromandel Express. Additionally, a goods train was also involved in the accident when some of the coaches of the Coromandel Express hit its wagons after derailing.
Horrific Scenes Captured in Aerial Footage
Aerial footage shared by news agency ANI provides a grim visual account of the aftermath of the train accident. The footage reveals multiple coaches derailed and some overturned, with scattered wreckage along the railway tracks. The severity of the impact is evident as the railway tracks are severely damaged. The rescue operation is underway, and numerous individuals can be seen gathered around the affected coaches.
Massive Rescue Efforts Underway
Authorities in Bhubaneswar have mobilized a large-scale response to the tragedy. Currently, 200 ambulances, 50 buses, and 45 mobile health units are operating at the site to provide immediate medical assistance. More than 1,200 personnel are involved in the rescue and relief operations. The bodies of the victims are being transported to hospitals using various vehicles, including tractors.
Investigation Launched into the Accident
The Indian Railways has announced that an inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the train accident. A M Chowdhary, Commissioner Railway Safety, South East Circle, will lead the investigation. The Commissioner Railway Safety is an entity under the Ministry of Civil Aviation responsible for examining railway accidents and ensuring safety measures.
This tragic train collision ranks as the fourth deadliest in India’s recorded history. The nation mourns the loss of lives and extends its support to the injured and their families.
