Today (April 22) is Earth Day, a global event marked by pledges of support for environmental protection. The annual celebrations will mark their 51st anniversary in 2021. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Restore Our Earth.’
The United Nations established April 22 as “International Mother Earth Day’ in 2009.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic represents an opportunity to reorient the world toward a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future.”
“Mother Earth is emphatically pleading for action. Let us Emphasize more than ever on this International Mother Earth Day the importance of transitioning to a more sustainable economy that benefits both people and the planet”.
SIGNIFICANCE OF EARTH DAY
Earth Day was founded in 1970, when twenty million people took to the streets to protest environmental degradation. The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, as well as other issues such as smog and polluted rivers, precipitated the event.
Earth Day continued to play a significant role in environmental activism for the next half-century.
On Earth Day 2016, the historic Paris Agreement was signed, bringing nearly 200 countries together to set a common goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
