The Indian government has decided to delay the implementation of import restrictions on laptops, personal computers, and related items, as announced by the Union Commerce Ministry. The new rules, which were set to come into effect soon, will now be in force from October 31.
Stay on Import Curbs
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification stating that import consignments of laptops, PCs, tablets, and other related items can be cleared until October 31, 2023, without the need for a license for restricted imports.
License Requirement from November 1
However, starting from November 1, 2023, a valid license for restricted imports will be mandatory for clearing import consignments of these electronic devices. The DGFT emphasized the importance of obtaining the necessary license for importers after the specified date.
Transitional Arrangements
The government has also introduced liberal transitional arrangements during this period for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, servers, and other electronic devices. These arrangements aim to ease the transition and facilitate businesses during the postponement period.
Government’s Stance
Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, clarified that there will be a transition period before the new rules are fully enforced. The government’s objectives behind these import curbs are to promote the use of trusted hardware and systems in the Indian tech ecosystem, reduce import dependence, and boost domestic manufacturing in this category of products.
