In a press conference discussing the nine-year tenure of the Narendra Modi government, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s growing influence and independent stance on key geopolitical issues. He mentioned that India has taken a clear stand on important developments such as the Russia-Ukraine War, China’s military actions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and Beijing’s promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Military Standoff with China
Since April-May 2020, India and China have been involved in a military standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This standoff resulted in the unfortunate loss of 20 Indian soldiers at Galwan in clashes with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

According to Jaishankar, India has emerged as a development partner over the past nine years. This can be seen in India’s proactive approach to assisting Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, even when most of the world was passive. Today, India is widely regarded as a development partner, particularly in its neighboring countries.
Combating Terrorism and Strategic Clarity
The Modi government has successfully worked to delegitimize terrorism originating from Pakistan. Since coming into power in 2014, the government has demonstrated strategic clarity and effective strategic communication.
India’s role as an independent force, its clear stand on geopolitical issues, and its emergence as a development partner are key highlights of the nine-year tenure of the Modi government in the realm of external affairs.
