Just a day after Southampton’s 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur confirmed their relegation, the club has announced the departure of manager Ivan Juric, ending a short-lived and ultimately unsuccessful tenure. The Saints are now preparing for life in the Championship with Simon Rusk taking over as interim manager, supported by midfielder Adam Lallana.
Juric’s Short Stint Ends After Record-Breaking Failure
Appointed in December 2024 following the sacking of Russell Martin, Juric inherited a squad in disarray and was tasked with turning around their fortunes. However, the Croatian’s reign resulted in just two wins from 16 matches across all competitions and a meagre four points in the league.
Southampton’s relegation with seven games remaining is now the earliest in Premier League history, and they sit rock bottom with just 10 points.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped,” the club said in its official statement.
Club Statement: Fighting Against the Odds
In a message to supporters, Southampton acknowledged the difficulty Juric faced, praising his effort and professionalism during a turbulent time.
“Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time… but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work.”
Juric had signed an 18-month deal, but the results never materialized. The club decided it was time to reset early, citing the importance of clarity heading into a crucial summer rebuild.
Simon Rusk and Adam Lallana Take Charge
With Juric gone, first-team coach Simon Rusk — who also took over temporarily following Martin’s dismissal in December — has again been named caretaker manager. He will be assisted by veteran midfielder Adam Lallana, who returns to a leadership role at the club where he began his career.
The search for a permanent manager is now underway, with Southampton’s priority being immediate promotion back to the Premier League.
Ivan Juric’s Exit: 7 Brutal Stats That Made It Inevitable
- Just 2 wins in 16 matches across all competitions
- Only 4 league points gained during his tenure
- 10 total points after 31 games – lowest in club history
- -49 goal difference, worst in the league
- Failed to win a single home game under Juric
- 13 league defeats in 16 games
- Earliest confirmed relegation in Premier League history (7 matches left)
Juric Wanted to Stay – Club Thought Otherwise
Despite the disastrous run, Juric appeared open to staying on and rebuilding:
“It’s really good to be a coach in the Premier League… I am ready,” Juric said after the Spurs loss.
But Southampton’s board seems intent on a clean break, hinting at a new direction both tactically and structurally. Whether Juric finds another role in England remains to be seen.
Southampton Face a Critical Summer
With Ivan Juric gone and Premier League status lost, Southampton’s summer now becomes one of the most important in club history. Recruitment, leadership, and fan trust are all on the line as they look to rebuild a team capable of returning to the top flight.
The Saints will aim to restore pride, stabilise financially, and avoid the fate of other clubs who faded after relegation.
