Jasprit Bumrah: Mumbai Indians’ Pace Spearhead Returns Amidst Form Concerns

Jasprit Bumrah's return to IPL 2025 has been met with mixed results. Here's an in-depth look at his comeback, current form, and what it means for MI.

After a three-month hiatus due to a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah made his much-anticipated return to the Mumbai Indians (MI) lineup in IPL 2025. While his presence bolsters MI’s bowling attack, his performances since the comeback have sparked discussions about his form and fitness.

Injury and Road to Recovery

Bumrah’s injury, which occurred during the fifth Test against Australia in January 2025, sidelined him from both the England T20I series and the Champions Trophy. Undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he was gradually eased back into competitive cricket. Despite being declared fit by the BCCI medical team, MI’s management has been cautious, monitoring his workload to prevent any recurrence.

Performance Post-Return

Since rejoining the MI squad, Bumrah has participated in five matches, claiming five wickets with an average of 31.60 and an economy rate of 7.90. His best figures this season stand at 2/25. In a recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 23, he conceded 39 runs in four overs without taking a wicket, raising concerns about his rhythm and effectiveness.

MI’s head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, remains optimistic about Bumrah’s return to peak form, emphasizing the need for patience as he readjusts to the T20 format after a prolonged absence.

Strategic Utilization and Team Dynamics

In his comeback matches, Bumrah has been utilized primarily in the middle and death overs, with new-ball responsibilities often assigned to Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. This strategy aims to manage his workload while leveraging his expertise in high-pressure situations.

Despite his current form, Bumrah’s experience and skill set remain invaluable to MI’s campaign, especially as the tournament progresses into its critical phases.

Looking Forward

As MI prepares for their upcoming matches, including the crucial fixture against Lucknow Super Giants, the team will be hoping for Bumrah to regain his match-winning prowess. His ability to deliver under pressure has been a cornerstone of MI’s past successes, and a return to form could be pivotal in their quest for another title.
