Before Friday, India had secured just four medals in track and field events at the World University Games. However, that all changed when star athlete Jyothi Yarraji achieved a historic feat by winning India’s first-ever 100m hurdles medal at the prestigious games. In a breathtaking performance, Yarraji clocked 12.78 seconds to secure the third position in the women’s 100m hurdles final, surpassing her earlier national record of 12.82 seconds set in October 2022.
Amlan Borgohain Joins the Triumph with a Bronze in 200m
It was a double celebration for India as another national record holder sprinter, Amlan Borgohain, claimed India’s first-ever 200m medal at the World University Games. Borgohain secured the bronze medal with a season’s best time of 20.55 seconds.
India’s Impressive Medal Haul
With these two remarkable achievements, India’s medal tally at the World University Games reached new heights. The nation has now won a total of 11 gold, 5 silver, and 9 bronze medals, firmly placing India at the fourth spot in the overall standings.
Previous Success in Sprint Races
India’s success in sprint races at the World University Games was limited before Yarraji and Borgohain’s historic victories. The only previous medal in this category was a 100m gold won by Dutee Chand in the 2019 edition.
