Karnataka Caste Survey Deferred Amid Hopeful Cabinet Tone, More Talks Next Week

A speIn a key development today, the Karnataka cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, concluded its special session on the Karnataka Caste Survey without arriving at any final decision. Ministers were instead instructed to submit their concerns in writing for further review during the next cabinet meeting.

The meeting, held at Vidhan Soudha, aimed to evaluate the findings of the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, also known as the Karnataka caste census. The report was submitted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes earlier this month.

“The discussion has been deferred for the next cabinet meeting,” said Minister N. Chaluvaraya Swamy. “CM, DCM, and 32 ministers participated. Many ministers still wish to speak on this.”

Volume of Report Prompts Ministers to Request More Time

Describing the survey as extensive, Minister Priyank Kharge said:

“The report is voluminous. It will take time to read and analyze.”

Kharge’s remarks underscore the magnitude of the report, which is expected to include detailed community-wise data on social, educational, and economic conditions of Karnataka’s population.

Minister KH Muniyappa also emphasized that at least one or two more sessions would be necessary to cover all aspects of the findings before proceeding with any decision.

Ministers Suggest More Deliberation Required

Minister Santosh Lad echoed a similar sentiment, calling the caste census issue “larger” and deserving of careful examination.

“It’s a major policy matter. More discussion will take place next week,” he added.

The decision to delay reflects a hopeful and structured tone within the cabinet, which appears committed to inclusive decision-making on what could become a landmark governance tool.

Earlier, Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed that the Backward Class Commission had already submitted the report to the cabinet and that CM Siddaramaiah had asked ministers to study it thoroughly ahead of today’s meeting.

What Is the Karnataka Caste Survey Report?

The Karnataka Caste Survey, formally titled the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, was compiled to gather caste-based data linked to income, education, and employment.

Its goal: to help the government reassess social justice programs, reservation quotas, and economic upliftment policies.

Once published, Karnataka would become the second Congress-ruled state, after Telangana, to officially release such a caste census. The implications of the survey could stretch far beyond state borders.
