Richest Candidates in Karnataka Elections 2023

The recently concluded Karnataka Election 2023 witnessed a significant rise in the number of crorepati candidates fielded by all major political parties, reveals an ADR report. As per the report, Congress, BJP, JDS, and AAP have fielded the highest number of crorepati candidates. The report analyses the self-sworn affidavits of 2586 candidates out of 2615 candidates, who contested in the Karnataka 2023 Assembly Elections. Read on to know more about the number of crorepati candidates fielded by each party.

According to the ADR report, some of the wealthiest candidates contesting in the Karnataka Elections 2023 include Krishna Byre Gowda from Congress with assets worth Rs 983.58 crore, P Ravi Shankar from BJP with assets worth Rs 749.97 crore, HD Kumaraswamy from JD(S) with assets worth Rs 276.15 crore, and H. Suresh from AAP with assets worth Rs 109.82 crore.

Role of Money Power in Elections

The report highlights the significant role of money power in the elections, as all major political parties have given tickets to wealthy candidates. It also reveals that the average assets per candidate contesting in the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023 is Rs 12.26 crore, which is a significant increase from Rs 7.68 crore in the 2018 elections.

The increasing trend of wealthy candidates in politics is a cause for concern as it raises questions about the fairness and equality of the democratic process. While it is important to have capable leaders, the focus on financial power should not overshadow the importance of merit and integrity in politics. It is essential for voters to be aware of the backgrounds and assets of their candidates to make informed decisions during elections.
