On Friday, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan emphasized the importance of taking the strictest action against criminals to restore confidence among the people. He stated that incidents of violence, particularly those affecting women, are deeply shameful and demand decisive measures. The Governor’s comments were in response to the recent Manipur incident.
Manipur Incident: A Context of Ethnic Violence
Since May 3, Manipur has witnessed a series of violent clashes, triggered by a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill districts. The march was a protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe status. Tragically, the situation has resulted in more than 160 fatalities and numerous injuries due to ethnic violence.
Opposition MPs’ On-the-Ground Assessment in Manipur
In response to the ongoing crisis, over 20 opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have departed for Manipur. Their two-day visit aims to assess the situation on the ground and understand the plight of the affected people.
A Pledge of Support and Solidarity
Before embarking on their visit, the MPs expressed their concern for the displaced population in Manipur. Kanimozhi, one of the MPs, revealed that more than 50,000 individuals had been forced to leave their homes to protect their lives, and they are now residing in camps. The MPs declared their commitment to stand with the people of Manipur and advocate for their rights and welfare.
The Importance of Holding Criminals Accountable
Governor Khan’s remarks underscore the significance of taking decisive actions against those responsible for the violence. He stressed that building trust and confidence among the people depends on ensuring that stringent measures are enforced against criminals. This, in turn, requires efficient functioning of law enforcement agencies, which the Governor believes is currently underway.
The situation in Manipur remains critical, and the actions taken in the aftermath of these incidents will be closely scrutinized to determine the commitment to justice and the welfare of the affected communities.
