The Keraleeyam Festival in Kerala has recently become a topic of controversy, with Minister K Radhakrishnan, responsible for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare, expressing his concerns about the portrayal of indigenous people at the event.
Minister’s Concerns
Minister K Radhakrishnan has raised concerns about the portrayal of tribals at the Keraleeyam festival. He believes that presenting the indigenous people as a “showcase” sends a wrong message. The festival featured various tribal groups in their traditional attire, showcasing their unique arts, crafts, and dance forms.
Academy’s Response
In response to the controversy, the Department of Culture and Folklore Academy clarified that no adivasis (indigenous people) were exhibited as mere showpieces at the festival. They assured the public that if there were any mistakes in the presentation, they would be rectified.
