Amid the recent discussions surrounding Threads, the CEO of Koo, Aprameya Radhakrishna, expressed his views on the potential impact of Threads on Twitter. He stated that Threads poses a potential threat to Twitter as both platforms aim to attract the same English-speaking user base.
Threads Gains Popularity and User Count
Threads, a microblogging app launched by Meta, has garnered significant attention, surpassing over 50 million users within just 24 hours of its release. This rapid growth has sparked conversations and concerns about its impact on existing social media platforms, particularly Twitter.
Koo’s CEO Assesses the Threat
Aprameya Radhakrishna, co-founder and CEO of Koo, believes that Threads may not pose a direct threat to Koo, as his platform caters to local language users. However, he acknowledges that Threads could potentially challenge Twitter, considering their shared target audience of English-speaking users.
Radhakrishna took to LinkedIn to express his thoughts on the matter. He emphasized that Koo currently has more than 80% of its user base conversing in local languages, while both Threads and Twitter are unlikely to exceed 5% of non-English users in the near future. He stressed the importance of inclusive experiences on social media for the vast majority of the world’s population that speaks non-English languages.
Koo’s Growth and Future Plans
Since its launch in March 2020, Koo has grown to support content in over 20 languages. With more than 60 million downloads and users spanning across 100 countries, Koo has established a strong presence in the social media landscape.
Looking ahead, Koo aims to introduce verified profiles, including those of journalists, Bollywood actors, and cricketers, on its premium service called Koo Premium. This move aims to enhance engagement between creators and their subscribers through interactive features. Subscribers will have the option to access exclusive content by subscribing to a weekly or monthly fee.
Threads’ Integration with Instagram and Impact on Twitter
Threads, closely integrated with Meta’s popular Instagram platform, offers text-based sharing functionalities. Positioned as a rival to Twitter, Threads allows users to share mini-posts, leveraging various elements from Instagram such as usernames and followers.
Meta has utilized its massive user base of over 2.35 billion active Instagram users to drive sign-ups for Threads. This strategy has started to impact Twitter, leading to its newly appointed CEO issuing a statement and reportedly considering legal action against Meta.
Twitter CEO Emphasizes Community and Uniqueness
In response to the evolving landscape, Twitter’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, recently urged the Twitter community to stay united. She emphasized that platforms like Twitter are often imitated but cannot be duplicated, recognizing the value and individuality of the Twitter community.
