Who is Kunal Kamra?

Kunal Kamra is a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian known for his incisive political satire and social commentary. He gained prominence in 2017 after receiving death threats for his satirical take on Indian hyper-nationalism. Kamra is recognized for his bold critiques of contemporary issues and the government, notably through his political-comedy podcast, “Shut Up Ya Kunal.”
Throughout his career, Kamra has faced controversies with figures such as journalist Arnab Goswami, actor Salman Khan, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, and organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Kamra’s recent special ‘Naya Bharat’ uploaded on YouTube drew strong reactions. In the video, he lampooned Maharashtra politics, referencing defections within Shiv Sena and mocking Eknath Shinde’s political shift using parodied Bollywood lyrics. Though Shinde wasn’t named directly, Kamra’s lyrics were seen as allusions to him.

Following the viral spread of Kamra’s clip, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area, where the special was recorded. Kamra’s latest post shows him holding the Constitution, captioned: “The only way forward…”
In response, the owners of Habitat Comedy Club announced the venue’s temporary closure. In an Instagram post, they stated: “Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices. We do not support violence and are shutting down till we find a safer way to operate.”
Shortly afterward, the BMC launched a demolition drive at the same location.
Legal Developments

A Zero FIR has been registered against Kamra. Additionally, Khar police booked Yuva Sena general secretary Rahool Kanal and detained 20 Shiv Sena activists under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act for vandalizing the venue.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 9, Dixit Gedam confirmed, “Two offences have been registered—one against the comedian for derogatory remarks, and another against those who ransacked the venue. Further investigations are ongoing.”
The unfolding controversy has drawn attention nationwide, spotlighting the fragile line between satire and offence, and rekindling debates about freedom of expression in India’s political and cultural spaces.
