Kupwara Firing: Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage Amid Escalating Tensions
In the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor, the Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed intense cross-border shelling, leading to significant civilian casualties and property damage. The Karnah sector, in particular, has been heavily targeted, with mortar shells and artillery rounds landing near residential areas shortly after midnight on May 8, 2025.
Civilian Impact and Evacuations
The shelling has forced residents to flee their homes in search of safety. In Terbuni village, eight Sikh homes were destroyed, compelling families to evacuate to Kupwara town, approximately 70 kilometers away. Joginder Singh, a local resident, expressed fear over the continuous aerial attacks, stating that the community is terrified and uncertain about returning to their homes.
Military Response and Ongoing Operations
The Indian Army has responded to the unprovoked firing with proportionate retaliation. Security forces remain on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to prevent further escalation. The continuous exchange of fire has raised concerns about the safety of civilians residing near the Line of Control (LoC).
What Lies Ahead
The recent events in Kupwara underscore the fragile nature of peace along the India-Pakistan border. With civilian lives lost and homes destroyed, there is an urgent need for both nations to engage in dialogue to de-escalate tensions. The international community continues to monitor the situation, urging restraint and the prioritization of civilian safety.
