Residents at a government medical college were shocked when Dr. Shahana, a 28-year-old trainee doctor, was found unconscious in the post-graduate students’ hostel. Colleagues made the discovery after she failed to report for duty on Monday night.
Love Turned Tragic
The cause of Dr. Shahana’s untimely death was revealed to be a heartbreaking love story. She and her lover, Dr. E A Ruwise, both doctors at the same institute, had planned to marry. However, the dream shattered when Ruwise’s family expressed their inability to meet the exorbitant dowry demands made by Shahana’s family from Venjaramoodu in Thiruvananthapuram.
A Desperate Act
Unable to cope with the distress caused by the dowry dispute and the subsequent cancellation of their marriage plans, Dr. Shahana allegedly self-administered an anesthesia drug, leading to her tragic end.
Legal Action
The police have registered a case against Dr. Ruwise, who is not only a fellow trainee doctor but also the state president of the Kerala Medical Post Graduate Association—a body representing resident trainee doctors in the state. Initially, the case was registered as an unnatural death, but it has now taken a legal turn.
This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the deep-seated issue of dowry in society and its devastating consequences. The medical community mourns the loss of a promising young doctor, emphasizing the urgent need for societal change.
