In a recent statement, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed his belief that Muslims in India do not trace their lineage back to Aurangzeb, the Mughal ruler. Speaking at an event in Akola, Fadnavis, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emphasized that individuals in India who hold nationalistic ideas never support Aurangzeb. He further emphasized that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the only king revered by the people of the state.
Fadnavis’s remarks come in the midst of an ongoing controversy surrounding Aurangzeb’s legacy in the state of Maharashtra. According to ANI, Fadnavis stated, “Our king is only Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We cannot have another king. Muslims in India are not descendants of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb and his clan came from outside. A Muslim in this country who has national ideas never approves of Aurangzeb. He respects only Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
The statement by Fadnavis was prompted by recent instances of violence in certain cities of Maharashtra, during which Fadnavis remarked that the progenies of Aurangzeb had suddenly emerged in the state. This comment elicited a response from Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), who questioned the identities of the children of Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte. Godse and Apte were executed for their involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
In response to the ensuing controversy, Union Minister Giriraj Singh made controversial remarks, referring to Nathuram Godse as a “saput” (worthy son) of India. Singh asserted that Godse, unlike Mughal rulers Babar and Aurangzeb, was not an invader as he was born in India. This statement drew criticism from Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, who questioned whether Godse could be considered a good son.
