Makers of the popular Rajnikanth starrer movie ‘Jailer’ have announced their decision to digitally modify a controversial scene. The scene in question portrays a contract killer wearing the jersey of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL team. The decision comes after the Delhi High Court issued an order regarding the depiction of this scene.
Court Orders Alteration of RCB Jersey Scene
The Delhi High Court has directed the defendants, Sun TV Network Ltd and film producer Kalanithi Maran, to make changes to the movie’s depiction of the RCB team jersey. According to the court’s ruling, effective from September 1, the scene featuring the RCB jersey should be edited or altered in the film’s theatrical presentation.
Resolution of Dispute and Alteration Agreement
The court was informed that following the initial hearing in a lawsuit filed by Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, a subsidiary of United Spirits Limited, the defendants and the plaintiff reached an agreement. As per the terms agreed upon, the defendants will digitally alter the clippings to ensure that the RCB team jersey is not recognizable. This alteration will include the removal of the jersey’s primary colors and branding of the sponsors.
Implementation and Broadcasting Guidelines
Justice Prathiba M Singh’s August 22 order specifies that the alteration must be completed before the feature film’s release on television, satellite, or any over-the-top (OTT) platform. The court’s directive extends to all parties involved, including the defendants and their distribution network. After September 1, 2023, the RCB jersey should not be displayed in theaters. For television, satellite, and OTT platforms, only the altered version of the film should be broadcasted.
Plaintiff’s Concerns and Disparagement Claim
Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, the plaintiff, expressed concerns about the unauthorized use of the RCB jersey in the film. The plaintiff argued that this depiction could negatively impact the team’s brand image and the rights of its sponsors, including the Muthoot Group. The plaintiff sought a permanent injunction against the defendants and the deletion of the scene involving the RCB jersey.
The decision to alter the scene in ‘Jailer’ reflects the resolution of a legal dispute over the use of the RCB jersey without permission. The court’s directive ensures that the film’s depiction aligns with the agreement between the parties involved.
