The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its latest round of invitees, which includes notable Indian artists. Among the invitees are actors Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, who are known for their roles in the film ‘RRR.’ Renowned director Mani Ratnam has also been invited. Other Indian invitees include Siddharth Roy Kapur, MM Keeravani, Karan Johar, Chaitanya Tamhane, Shaunak Sen, and KK Senthil Kumar.
Recognition for Indian Artists
The inclusion of several Indian artists on the Academy’s list highlights their growing prominence in the global film industry. Alongside renowned international celebrities like Taylor Swift and Ke Huy Qwan, these Indian artists have been recognized for their significant contributions to the arts and sciences of motion pictures. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed their pride in welcoming these talented individuals and emphasized their vital impact on movie fans worldwide.
Commitment to Representation and Inclusion
The Academy reaffirmed its commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity in its statement. Membership is based on professional skills, and the selection process aims to reflect diverse talents across cinematic disciplines. The current list of invitees, totaling 398 individuals, represents a deliberate reduction compared to previous years. This adjustment comes as the Academy sought to address concerns about underrepresentation and increase the inclusion of women and people of color. Notably, the class of 2023 comprises 40% women, 34% individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and 52% individuals from 50 different nations and territories worldwide.
Indian Artists’ Success at the Oscars
Indian artists made a significant impact at the recent Oscars ceremony. MM Keeravani and Chandrabose won the Oscar for Best Song for their work on ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the film ‘RRR.’ Additionally, ‘The Elephant Whisperers,’ an Indian production, received the award for Best Documentary Short. These achievements highlight the growing recognition and influence of Indian cinema on the international stage.
