Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Funeral has ignited a political controversy, with BJP and Congress exchanging sharp accusations. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused Congress of engaging in “low-level petty politics” over the arrangements for Singh’s cremation.
“There must be dignity in death, that is what BJP always believes in. Unfortunately, Congress party even on the issue of the final rites of Dr. Manmohan Singh wants to indulge in petty politics,” Poonawalla stated.
Shehzad Poonawalla Criticizes Congress Leadership
Poonawalla further lambasted Congress leaders Rahul and Sonia Gandhi for allegedly disrespecting Singh during his tenure. He cited incidents like Rahul Gandhi publicly tearing an ordinance Singh supported and Sonia Gandhi forming the National Advisory Council (NAC), undermining Singh’s authority.
“What about the ordinance that was torn by Rahul Gandhi when Dr. Manmohan Singh was on foreign soil? Was he undermined by this or strengthened?” Poonawalla asked.
Rahul and Sonia Gandhi Criticized
The BJP leader highlighted past incidents involving Congress leaders Rahul and Sonia Gandhi that he claims undermined Singh’s leadership during his tenure. He referenced Rahul Gandhi’s public opposition to Singh’s ordinance while he was abroad and Sonia Gandhi’s creation of the National Advisory Council (NAC), calling it a “parallel government.”
“What about the ordinance that was torn by Rahul Gandhi when Dr. Manmohan Singh was on foreign soil? Was he undermined or strengthened by this?” Poonawalla questioned.
Congress Questions Cremation Site for Manmohan Singh Funeral
On the other hand, Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed disappointment over the government’s choice of Nigambodh Ghat, a public crematorium, as the cremation site for Singh. Tagore claimed the location lacked space for dignitaries and proper arrangements befitting a former Prime Minister.
“It is deeply painful to see the final journey of Dr. Manmohan Singh taken to a congested and common place,” Tagore remarked.
Honors and Rituals Post-Creation
Despite the political clash, Singh’s cremation was conducted with full state honors, attended by top dignitaries. On Sunday, Singh’s ashes were immersed in the Yamuna River near Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila Sahib, accompanied by religious rituals performed by his family.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly assured Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Singh’s family that a memorial site would be allocated after trust formalities.
